Women’s Political Participation Vital for Sustainable Peace: UK

Commenting on the essential need for women’s participation in national programs, the British Gender Equality Special Envoy Joanna Roper on Wednesday said that women’s political participation is a vital element for sustainable peace in the country.

Roper who is on a trip to Afghanistan for the celebration of UK-Afghanistan Collation on Women Peace Security said that Britain is committed to implementing its action plan for women in Afghanistan.

She said the implementation of the plan will help to further enhance the role of Afghan women in peace and security.

According to Roper, the action plan will also boost the role of Afghan women in education, training, peace, capacity building among girls in the security and defense sector and for further support to victims of violence.

UK has also trained over a 1,000 Afghan women to teach Afghan girls in remote regions.

“... the education challenge has helped over three hundred Afghan girls to attend primary school including two hundred and sixty four girls with disabilities who are traditionally the most excluded and new transition phase has just started, which will support almost a hundred thousand highly marginalized girls to proceed to secondary education, we will train a thousand young women to teach in remote communities,” she said.

Meanwhile a number of women’s rights activists in the country have also said that the action plan is essential to help Afghan women in remote parts of Afghanistan who are deprived of basic facilities of life.

“This action plan also includes capacity building programs for women who are working in the security and defense sectors in Afghanistan. The action plan has been formulated on the basis of the necessities and following a series of discussions,” said women’s rights activist Wazhma Frogh.

Based on the action plan, Afghan women working in the security and defense sector will get more support if they are willing to continue their education.
