Herat Artists Portray Rural Afghans’ Life In Their Artworks

An exhibition of artworks created by Herat University students in Herat city portrayed the life of Afghans living in rural areas and their untold stories.

The five-day exhibition showcases almost 100 artworks by 13 artists from the Fine Arts Faculty of Herat University.

Some of the artworks are portraits of young and elder Afghans with smiles on their faces despite the hardships they face in their lives.

“Our main message is to show the realities of our society,” said Adela Najib, an artist.

As a much-debated topic, some of the paintings portray the hope of Afghans for peace.

“The Afghan people are tired of war and violence and it is enough. Our paintings have the message of peace as well,” said Ghulam Sakhi Sakhawatmand, an artist.

“The concepts of the paintings are different. As you see, most of them are smiling and some of them are about violence,” Sahar Khalili, an artist said.

Mohammad Tawfiq Rahmani, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Herat University, said the quality of the artworks of his students has improved.

“I see lots of improvement in their artworks when I compare them with the artworks which were displayed three years ago,” he said.
