Protest Over Bollywood Movie Extends to UK

The leader of a Hindu nationalist group has said that all UK cinemas screening a controversial Bollywood film should be “burnt down”, according to the UK’sExpress.

Critics believe the movie, which cost £17million ($22.6 million USD) to produce, suggests the iconic 14th century Hindu queen, Padmavati, engaged in a romantic relationship with Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji.

The picture was cleared by the British Board of Film Classification without any cuts.

Sukhdev Singh, the leader of the Rajput Karni Sena caste group, is seeking to halt the film’s circulation, calling on UK Hindus to adopt violence in order to stop its screening, the Express reported.

“I call on Hindus in the UK and particularly my community brothers to protest against the screening of the film there. I have told them any cinema hall which screens the movie will be burnt,” he told Republic TV.

Protests against the film in India have turned violent, with unconfirmed reports that a body was found hanging outside a fort in the northern state of Rajasthan on Friday morning, the Express reported.

Opposition to the movie has gone to the top of Indian politics as Surajpal Amu, an officer of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), remarking that he would pay 10 million rupees to anyone who beheaded the film’s star, Deepika Padukone, and its director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

An official of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP condemned the death threat, adding that the party was considering legal action against him.

Modi himself has not commented on the matter.
