Afghanistan’s Population To Increase To 32.2M This Year: Report

Separate reports released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) show that Afghanistan’s population will increase to 32.2 million by the end of this year while the findings estimates the current population at least 31 million.

The reports, which have similar findings, show that the population will increase by 2.1 percent by the end of this year.

On average, Afghanistan’s population increases by 2.14 percent every year, the reports say, adding that the population will be doubled by 2050.

The reports show that youths make a big percentage of Afghanistan’s population.

“Afghanistan has the second youngest population in the world. Investing in adolescence and youth is equally crucial to sustainable development,” said Koffi Kouame, the UNFPA Country Director.

A senior official from Ministry of Economy said the population growth is higher than economic development and it needs to be balanced.

“Our economic growth is 2.7 percent which is not enough comparing to our population growth. Thus, activities need to be done in two parts: the economic development should increase and also we should have a more desirable population growth to maintain public welfare in the country,” said Mohammad Ismail Rahimi, the Technical Deputy Head of the Ministry of Economy.

The Central Statistics Organization report, which has been prepared during this year, shows that from the estimated 32.2 million population, 51 percent of them will be men and 49 percent will be women.

The report also shows that from the total population of the country, 50 percent of them are under the age of 18 and 16.2 million people are dependent in terms of economy.

“In fact, on average each person has a dependency. It means that every citizen of the country is supporting another one,” said Hasibullah Mowahid,Technical Deputy Head of the Central Statistics Organization.

Officials from Ministry of Public Health, meanwhile, said the ministry faces lack of budget to help improve maternal health.

“One woman loses her life during pregnancy and birth in every two hours in Afghanistan,” said Zulaikha Anwari, Chairperson of Maternal Department of the Ministry of Public Health.

According to UNFPA’s report, the world’s population this year will increase by 1.1 percent and by the end of the year the total population will reach to 7.6 billion.
