Kabul Hosts Farmer’s Day Festival

Hundreds of farmers from around the country showcased their products at an expo in Kabul on Thursday to celebrate Farmer’s Day.

The festival is held every year, on the second day of the new solar year.

“I have been cultivating saffron in Paghman (district in Kabul) for four years and I have seen good results, but people are not trying to make it common.

Make saffron cultivation common and I am sure we will be self-reliant if we did this,” said Abdul Jabbar, a farmer.

At least 230 types of products for farmers and gardeners were on display at the expo.

“Holding such exhibitions helps showcase new products and people become familiar with them,” said Abdullah, a farmer.

“Our demand from government is to boost marketing for our products because women are faced with many problems in this respect,” said Shabana, a participant at the expo.

Minister of Agriculture Naseer Ahmad Durani said at the event that new cold storage facilities and irrigation networks will be built and many other facilities will be provided to farmers this year.

“In order to increase farmer’s products, the ministry of agriculture continues its efforts to overcome lack of water in 30 provinces by building 257 irrigation networks,” Durani said.

“Agriculture has not been mechanized in the country. Products will increase and agriculture will meet standard norms if this happened,” said Hameed Helmandi, a senior advisor to President Ashraf Ghani.

The expo to celebrate Farmer’s Day in Badam Bagh area in Kabul will last for three days and 100,000 visitors are expected to attend the event.
