Uzbekistan To Reconnect Power In Kabul By Midnight

Officials from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) on Thursday said that Uzbekistan will reconnect 200 megawatts of the 300 megawatts power at about 12:00am tonight.

DABS chief Amanullah Ghalib said that the power supply company has purchased an additional 50 megawatts of electricity from Uzbekistan and that technical work on the transfer of additional power led to the termination of power in Afghanistan.

“We recall the power cut which we witnessed in the past. At night, the streets are dark and we cannot see any people around,” said a resident of Kabul, Najibullah.

“Whether one is a student, a teacher or other, our lives are connected to power. We call on the government to address this issue,” said Rashid, a resident in Kabul.

According to DABS, over the past three days, the power shortage in Kabul increased from 30 percent to 45 percent.

“First they (Uzbek officials) set a five-day deadline, then we asked them to speed up the work. They said that they are working for three shifts to change the transmission lines. Then they pledged to reconnect by 12:00am tonight,” said Ghalib.

Meanwhile, experts have said that the government, besides implementing other mega projects, encourage people to generate power from solar systems.

“To introduce the generation of power among families like that in European countries, China, India and other countries, the Afghan government should subsidize the raw materials for electricity and make it cheaper and accessible to ordinary people,” said economic expert, Qais Mohammadi.

With the additional 50 megawatts, the overall power Afghanistan imports will reach 450 megawatts.

DABS also plans to purchase an additional 50 megawatts from Tajikistan as well as from the operation of Tarakhail Thermal Power, which has the capacity to generate 60 megawatts of power.
