Badakhshan IEC Upbeat About Kohistan Security

Officials from the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan’s (IEC) Badakhshan office on Monday said it will soon start the voter registration process in Kohistan district.

The Badakhshan police chief said the district has been cleared of Taliban insurgents and that government forces are on red alert so as to provide security to the electoral process in the district.

Kohistan district of Badakhshan is one of the most volatile districts in the province after Wardoj and Yamgan districts. The Taliban frequently attack the district because of its strategic location.

“In a joint operation between the security forces in Badakhshan we successfully cleared Kohistan district of the enemies and now the election commission can kick off the voter registration process without any fear,” said Sabir Aryan, Badakhshan police chief.

“We warmly welcome the clearance of Kohistan district by the security forces, we are fully ready to start the process once the material arrives,” said Hamidullah Baloch, head of the IEC’s site office in Badakhshan.

In addition, deputy governor of Badakhshan Akhtar Khairzadah has said that the security forces are ready to secure the registration process in Kohistan district.

“We are involved in discussions with the police commandant and the commander of the division in the province. Hopefully we will be able to transfer the materials in the next few days,” he said.

Statistics provided by the IEC site office in Badakhshan indicate that since the start of the voter registration process on April 14, more than 170,000 people have registered in the province.
