Haneef Atmar Runs For President

Former National Security Advisor Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Friday entered the race for presidential elections with former Vice President Mohammad Yunus Qanooni as his first Vice President and Deputy Chief Executive Mohammad Mohaqiq as his second Vice President.

“Peace and Moderation” is the name of Atmar’s election ticket, he told reporters at the Independent Election Commission.

Atmar, 51, has a diploma in Information Technology and Computers, and a master’s degree in Public Policy, International Relations and Post-war Reconstruction studies from University of York in the UK.

He has served as interior minister during former President Hamid Karzai’s government as well as the national security advisor to President Ghani.

Yunus Qanooni has served as Vice President to former President Karzai in 2014. He is a senior member of Jamiat-e-Islami party of Afghanistan led by Acting Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani.

Atmar’s another running mate for second vice president, Mohammad Mohaqiq, is the second deputy chief executive of Afghanistan and chairman of the People’s Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan.

Addressing an event with his team mates on Friday morning, Atmar said that so far “more than 30 political parties and movements have announced their support” to his team.

Also supporting his team are former President Karzai, former President Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan led by Sayed Hamid Gailani, Jamiat-e-Islami’s senior members Ismail Khan and Atta Mohammad Noor, former Defense Minister Bismillah Khan, MP Sayed Ali Kazemi, Wahidullah Sabawoon, Jamil Karzai, among others.

According to Atmar, an agreement has been signed between major supporters of his team based on which there will be some reforms in the system.

Atmar said he hopes that the election commissions will hold a transparent election.

He ruled out “rumors” about a change in the system by his team and said that “the presidential system will not change but "there will be some reforms in it”.

So far, Atmar is the eighth candidate to run for president. The registration process of presidential candidates will close on January 20.

Abdul Latif Pedram. Hakim Torsan, Sayed Noorullah Jalili, Enayatullah Hafiz, Zalmai Rassoul, Noorulhaq Ulumi and Faramarz Tamanna have so far announced that they will run for president.
