Watchdogs Want Timely Transfer Of Election Materials

While seven days have remained to the October 20 elections, a number of electoral monitoring organizations said they are concerned about a delay in sending election materials to some provinces and that this will affect the transparency of the polls.

The CEO of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan, Yusuf Rasheed, said they are worried about interferences by some local powerful men in the upcoming elections.

“Materials should arrive in the polling centers on-time, they should be used properly and employees should be trained. We are worried that a number of powerful men who have ties with some candidates will create problems on the election day,” said Rasheed.

Meanwhile, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said the materials will be sent to all polling centers as soon as possible to ensure transparency in the process.

The IEC spokesman Sayed Hafizullah Hashemi said biometric devices and other election materials will be sent to all provinces and polling centers ahead of the election day.

“The transfer of the materials to provinces has started. Some of the materials have arrived in districts and from there they will be transferred to villages,” said Hashemi.

Some Kabul residents meanwhile said they are ready to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The residents urged the people to vote to candidates based on their competencies, not relations, tribal or ethnic issues.

“I am an Afghan and will I participate in elections to use my right to vote,” Kabul resident Ezatullah said.

“Election is a national and is a nice process. Every Afghan should participate in this process,” a Kabul resident Mohammad Shafi said.

“We should not vote based on ethnicity. We should vote to our favorite candidates,” said Haji Mohammad, a Kabul resident.

The October 20 elections will be held nationwide in over 5,000 polling centers.
