IEC Needs $192 Million For Presidential Elections

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Thursday held a meeting with elections stakeholders and signed cooperation agreements with them on the upcoming presidential polls, which are scheduled for September 28.

The IEC has estimated that $192 million is needed for the presidential, provincial councils, district councils and Ghazni parliamentary elections which all will be held on the same day.

IEC commissioner Mohammad Abdullah said government and donor countries will provide the budget for the elections.

“The primary budget has been predicted $192 million. We have two sources; the first one is the Finance Ministry and the second source is international donors,” he said at the meeting. “They both have been cooperating with us, but their cooperation is preconditioned on presenting a specific budgeting plan by the election commission.”

The electoral process stakeholders assured the election commission that they will play their roles in holding the elections successfully.

Heads of security agencies, who have the responsibility of elections’ security, said they are ready to provide a secure and safe environment for the process.

“We have comprehensive and complete plans considering the lessons learned from previous elections,” Acting Interior Minister Massoud Andarabi said.
