Presidential hopeful Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Sunday reiterated his call on government and election commissions to put in place all required measures to ensure that the upcoming presidential elections are held on time, transparent, credible and inclusive to protect the democratic system in the country.

Addressing a ceremony on women’s day, Atmar said the elections will be held and it is a must.

Atmar, who is running for president with former Vice President Mohammad Yunus Qanooni and Deputy Chief Executive Mohammad Mohaqiq as his running mates, is believed to be a potential rival for President Ashraf Ghani in the upcoming elections.

“The system should get its credibility from the Constitution and through the will of the nation. No one should be worried about this. We have always urged that peace should come within the framework of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” he reiterated.

Atmar, who has served as the National Security Advisor for President Ghani, assured his supporters that there will be no compromise on women’s rights in peace talks with the Taliban.

According to him, peace is applicable only within the framework of the Afghan government. He assured that women’s rights and other achievements of the country will not be compromised in the peace process.

Other politicians who attended the event said there is no chance of going back to the era of the Taliban.

“There are concerns that there is the possibility that we will return to the past... Women will not allow anyone to take us back to the past,” said Fawzia Kofi, an MP.

Atmar says the peace process without women’s participation is not acceptable.
