Twenty nine years ago, Soviet troops left Afghanistan after a 10-year war which claimed the lives of over a million people and left millions more wounded.
The Soviet Union, with its 120,000 soldiers equipped with modern weapons, invaded Afghanistan on 27 December 1979 - from both the ground and air.
Over the years, Afghanistan’s Mujahedeen rose up against them and following their withdrawal, felt their defeat had been the start of the end of the cold war.
