GOFTMAN: Questions Around Ceasefire Discussed

The first ever ceasefire between government and the Taliban came about over Eid and despite having lasted only three days, it proved to be hugely encouraging for Afghans across the country.

President Ashraf Ghani extended the ceasefire and called on the Taliban to do the same, but the group has failed to do so and instead resumed attacks across the country.

In this episode of Goftman questions are asked such as whether a ceasefire of this nature can lead to talks with the Taliban?

Also, what is the political importance of such a ceasefire and did the Taliban call for its three-day truce out of its own free will or was their external pressure put on them to do so?

In this episode of Goftman, host Partaw Naderi discusses the topic with the following guests:

  • Shahussain Murtazawi, a spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani
  • Daud Moradian, head of Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies
  • Ghafoor Lewal, writer and researcher
  • Waheed Ahmad, international affairs analyst
