The history of media in Afghanistan goes back to 1873 during the reign of Amir Sher Ali Khan. The first journal started in Afghanistan was called the Shamsunnahar journal.

Since that time, media activity in Afghanistan has suffered many ups and downs. This is now the fourth time that media in Afghanistan is working freely and press freedom is strengthening. However, during recent years, the rise and development of media work in Afghanistan has increased unprecedentedly, but the Afghanistan media and journalism community has paid a major price for it.
 
Over the past decade and a half, according to reports, at least 90 journalists in Afghanistan either became the victims of suicide attacks or were assassinated by the militant groups.
