GOFTMAN: Will US Sanctions on Iran Impact Afghanistan?

On May 8, US President Trump announced that he was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, unraveling the signature foreign policy achievement of his predecessor Barack Obama, isolating the United States from its Western allies and sowing uncertainty before a risky nuclear negotiation with North Korea.

Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed between the Islamic republic of Iran and the world powers such as Russia, US, Britain, France, Germany and China in a move to curb Iran’s strides for obtaining a nuclear weapon.

What impacts will the US sanctions on Iran have on the economic activities in the region particularly on Afghanistan?

Does the US want to impose crippling sanctions on Iran to destroy Iran’s economy?

This comes after last year Afghanistan, Iran and India signed a multinational agreement on Iran’s Chabahar Port in a move to increase economic activities between the member nations. Afghanistan by signing the Chabahar Port agreement wants to curb its reliance on Pakistani ports in Karachi.

In this episode of Goftman, host Partaw Naderi discusses the topic with the following gusts:

•    Saifuddin Saihoon, economic expert
•    Tawfiq Dawari, deputy head of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI)
•    Intezar Khadim, political analyst
