Apple Launches New, Cheaper iPad

Apple introduced a new iPad this week at only $329 USD at its education event in Chicago.

Apple unveiled the new version of its iOS-powered tablet at the Lane Tech College Prep High School - the largest public high school in Chicago – on Tuesday.

"Macs and iPads are used throughout schools by students for everything from music to language arts and even advanced robotics," Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the event.

According to cnet.com, Apple called the 9.7-inch tablet "our most affordable iPad."

The addition to the iPad line-up, which includes the top-end iPad Pro and the smaller iPad Mini 4, starts at $299 for schools and $329 for consumers for the 32GB model.

Cnet.com reported that the new iPad is available for order starting Tuesday, and shipping will start this week.

The Verge reports that it has the same basic 9.7-inch screen size, bezels, Touch ID sensor, button placement, and cameras.

But the big new features are Apple Pencil support, which works the same as it did on the iPad Pro, and an update to the A10 processor.

The Verge reports that as with the previous iPad, it has 10 hours of battery life, an 8-megapixel rear camera that supports 1080p video, a front-facing FaceTime HD camera, and supports optional LTE.

However, there is no Smart Keyboard connector, which seems like a big omission, reported Verge.

The updated iPad will comes in silver, space gray, and a new gold finish.

This new iPad will be a key addition to Apple’s lineup as it seeks to fight back against Google’s Chromebooks.
