Afghan Wrestling Team Warms Up for Asian Games

Officials from the Afghanistan Wrestling Federation on Monday said the national team is currently confined to a training camp in preparation for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

They said that the national team wrestlers have been in training every day for the six months.

The Asian Games are expected to kick off in the Indonesian capital Jakarta with the next five days.

Despite having little resources, the Afghan wrestling team is committed to hoisting their country’s flat at the games.

“We have been training for the games for the past six months; we have been at a training camp, organized by the Olympic Committee, for more than a month; we will compete in the 97 kg category,” said Noor Ahmad Ahmadi, a member of the team.

“I am hoping for a good result in the event as we have practiced for the past six months,” said Malik Jan Sadid, another member of the team.

The team’s coach has also expressed hope that the Afghan wrestlers perform well in the games.

“We are ‘quarantined’ by the Olympic Committee over the past month and practice twice a day,” said national wrestling coach Sher Jan Ahmadi.

The international sports event will be held from August 18 to September 2, 2018, in Jakarta and Palembang. Athletes from 46 sports categories will compete in the event. 80 athletes from Afghanistan will compete in the event.
