Cyclists Race For Kabul Environment Protection

In a social move, dozens of cyclists pedaled from the Darul Aman Palace to Dehmazang Square in the west of Kabul to protect environment.

The race was organized by the National Environment Protection Agency, Kabul Municipality and some other institutions to promote cycling and protect the environment.

The cyclists said one of the main reasons behind the air pollution is the increase of population in the city and rise in number of vehicles.

They asked Kabul residents to use bicycles instead of cars to help hand in keeping the environment clean.

“Bicycle is a good vehicle. It does not create traffic and environmental problems,” Sina Safi, a cyclist said.

“It is good to promote the use of bikes an also cycling. Everyone should use bicycle when they go to their work or somewhere else,” Alim Sehatmand, another cyclist, said.

Organizers of the event said such races are effective in promoting the use of bicycles in the country which in turn it will decrease air pollution in the city.

“Everyone has a responsibility to protect environment,” Shah Zaman Maiwandi, director of the National Environmental Protection Authority, said.

“We will establish special roads for cycling under the Bicycle Master Plan. Work on 90 percent of this plan has been completed,” Abdullah Habibzai, acting mayor of Kabul, said.

Zakia Ahmadi, a female cyclist from Bamiyan said she came from Bamiyan with her family to pedal along other cyclists in Kabul. She got the first position in the race.

“We all three girls have come from Bamiyan. I got the first position and I am happy because it pushed me one step forward to my goals,” she said.

“Cycling in Kabul roads was my dream,” said Aqsa Sama, another cyclist.
