Trump Threatens To Pull US Out Of WTO

US President Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw the United States from the World Trade Organization. Trump said he is considering an executive order linking capital gains taxes to inflation.

In an Oval-Office interview with Bloomberg News, Trump also said Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ job is safe until the midterm elections — though he did not comment on keeping him on past November — and the Fed should help him more in his trade fight with China.

Speaking about the WTO, Trump told Bloomberg he would pull out unless the organization starts treating the US better.

“If they don't shape up, I would withdraw from the WTO,” Trump said in the interview with Bloomberg News.

According to a report by Market Watch news agency, withdrawing from the WTO — which the US helped create in 1995 — could have huge repercussions for the global economy. The organization’s role is to resolve worldwide trade disputes, but Trump and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer have sharply criticized it and accused the WTO of interfering with US sovereignty.

Trump said the EU’s recent offer to drop tariffs on US cars was “not good enough,” and said “The European Union is almost as bad as China, just smaller.”

Trump has repeatedly claimed that China and the EU treat the U.S. unfairly on trade.

Trump said he wished the Federal Reserve would do more to help him in his administration’s trade disputes, saying other central banks help their own countries or regions. And while he has criticized Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for recent interest-rate hikes, Trump told Bloomberg he didn’t regret appointing him, calling him a man “who I like and respect.”

The US president said he’s “thinking about” an executive order tying capital gains taxes to inflation.

As for Sessions, whom Trump has harshly criticized for more than a year over his decision to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian election interference, Trump said he “would love to have him do a great job,” and said his job was safe for the time being. When asked if he would comply with a potential subpoena from special counsel Robert Mueller, Trump said, “I’ll see what happens” adding, “I view it as an illegal investigation.”
