MEHWAR: Moscow Meeting Discussed

The Moscow talks on peace in Afghanistan, between Afghan politicians and Taliban members, got underway in the Russian capital on Tuesday afternoon.

Opening remarks by former president Hamid Karzai, and Taliban delegation leader Abbas Stanakzai, were streamed live on social media – in a stark break from previous talks.

Karzai’s speech lasted about five minutes and saw the former president drive home the need for peace and unity in the country.

Stanakzai however spoke a lot longer and also outlined the group’s strategies for peace, governance, health, women’s rights, development projects and on reducing civilian casualties.

Stanakzai said Afghanistan’s Constitution was illegitimate and had been forced on Afghans by foreigners. He also said the Constitution was a major obstacle to peace.

In this episode host Shogofa Danish discusses the topic with the following guests:

Sardar Mohammad Nadir Naeemi, HPC deputy
Assad Wahidi, university lecturer
Asif Ashna, political analyst
