Afghanistan Leaves Asian Games With Only Two Medals

The Afghan athletes left the Asian Games in Jakarta with only two bronze medals - for Wushu and Korash - and are expected to return home on Monday.

The Afghan National Olympic Committee said the reasons that the Afghan athletes could not get more medals at the games was the lack of time for training and poor management by former managers of the sport departments.

“So far we have not done anything for Afghanistan athletes to expect them to bring medals from such big events. There were many other countries too that did not get medals from the Asian Games,”said Hafiz Wali Rahimi, head of the National Olympic Committee.

Meanwhile, sports analysts said if the situation continues in this way, it will be a big crisis for sports in the country.

“Poor management in different levels, lack of facilities, government’s inattention and political interferences in the sport federations are all the causes that our athletes get sucha result in international events,”said Hamid Elmi, a sports expert.

“They (the Olympic committee) spent 22 million AFs and listed 79 athletes but sent 120 athletes to the competitions. The result was very weak while before the competitions most of the athletes were quarantined,”said Roman Abbasi, an athlete.

From Afghanistan, 80 athletes from 16 sport categories had attended at the competitions in Jakarta.

China with 263 medals located at the top of the medals table and Afghanistan with two bronze medals is at the 35th row of the table.
