Afghan Cyclists Arrive In Turkey Via Lapis Lazuli Route

A group of 10 Afghan cyclists has reached their last destination during their one-month journey through the Lapis Lazuli Trade and Transit Route from Herat province in Afghanistan to Turkey via Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Their journey was started on April 22. They are carrying the message of peace to the Lapis Lazuli member countries.

The Lapis Lazuli Corridor was inaugurated by President Ashraf Ghani last December. It connects Afghanistan through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia to the Black Sea and ultimately through Turkey to the Mediterranean Sea and Europe.

“We succeeded to achieve our goal and pass on the message of peace and friendship to the people of the countries,” said Mohammad Seddiq Jaami, head of the cyclists’ group.

The cyclists said they were warmly welcomed on their way to Turkey.

“Azerbaijan will continue its cooperation with Afghan athletes,” said Farhad Aliyev, deputy head of Azerbaijan’s Cycling Federation.

The cyclists said they traveled 2,000 kilometers from Herat to Istanbul city in Turkey.

“The cyclists succeeded to pass on the message of solidarity and peace to Lapis Lazuli member countries,” said Afzal Ahmadi, a counselor at Afghanistan’s Embassy in Azerbaijan.
