Eight Countries Ask UN To Address Rohingya Crisis

The United States, Britain, France and five other countries have asked the United Nations Security Council to discuss the fate of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees driven from Myanmar.

The council will hold a meeting next week on Tuesday to hear the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi’s report on Rohingya crisis.

Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Equatorial Guinea are other countries which requested the talks, the Hindu reported.

The meeting comes at least three months after the council issued a statement which asked for permission to the Rohingya to return to their homes.
More than 750,000 Rohingya have so far fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar.

Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed last month to repatriate the Rohingya within two years, but the United Nations has expressed concerns after the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, was kept out of the agreement.
