Iran Reacts To NATO Leaders’ Concerns On Missile Program

Iran has dismissed as “baseless” the concerns expressed by NATO leaders at the Brussels Summit over its ballistic missile program.

NATO leaders on Thursday said they are concerned about Iran’s "destabilizing" activities in the Middle East, its intensified missile tests and the range and precision of its ballistic missiles, XinhuaNet reported.

“We closely monitored the discussion at the meeting, especially the United States’ behavior and pressures on members of NATO,” said Bahram Qasemi, Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman.

He said it is surprising that some states and individuals are still insisting on repeated "baseless allegations" regarding Iran’s policies.

NATO leaders meanwhile called on Iran to continue to fully cooperate in a timely manner with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the report, Qasemi responded that the IAEA, as the only specialized international authority on nuclear issues, has always corroborated the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities.

“NATO member states’ concern over Iran’s missile program is completely pointless,” he added.

He said the Islamic republic's missile program is completely conventional and defensive and that Iran, like all independent countries in the world, is entitled to have all conventional defense programs.

Quoted by Xinua.Net, he said Iran’s regional policy favors cooperation and dialogue within the region and with its neighbors.

“Iran believes that none of the crises in the region has a military solution,” he said as quoted in the report.

This comes as US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he expects Iran "at some point" to ask the United States for a deal.

Trump was taking questions at a press briefing on the second day of the NATO allies summit in Brussels.

When asked about Iran, Trump said the Iranians are "treating the US with a lot more respect right now.

“Iran at some point will call me and ask for a deal, and we'll make a deal,” he said. “They are feeling a lot of pain right now,” he added.
