Pakistani Student Throws Shoe at Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif

A Pakistani seminary student on Sunday hurled a shoe at Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif during an event in Lahore City, the capital of Punjab province.

The incident came after Sharif took to the podium in Punjab’s Jamia Naeemia Madrasa to address the crowd. Suddenly a member of the audience threw a shoe at Sharif, which hit him on the chest. The student then started chanting slogans against the premier.

This came just a day after a man was arrested for throwing ink at Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif during his speech at a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz convention in Punjab.

Sunday’s shoe-thrower was immediately detained by the seminary's administration and later handed over to police officials, Geo News reported.

But Sharif managed to address the audience later and he praised the seminary’s leader Mufti Naeem.

Pakistan Police have said the attacker, identified as Talha Munawwar, is a former student of the seminary. According to reports, Munawwar has been taken to hospital after having been injured during scuffles after the attack.

In addition, police said they have arrested two other suspicious persons from the seminary.

Talking to Geo News, senior journalist Sohail Warraich, who was at the event, said the attacker was chanting slogans in favor of a religious party which carried out a prolonged protest against the government in Islamabad last year.
