Trump To Meet Kim Jong-un In Singapore

US President Donald Trump’s long-awaited meeting with Kim Jong-un will take place in Singapore on June 12.

Trump confirmed the first details of the summit through a tweet on Thursday. “The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” he said.

Once dubbed an "Asian Switzerland”, Singapore represents neutral ground for the two leaders.

Singapore, over 4,800 kilometers south of Pyongyang, maintains diplomatic relations with North Korea which has an embassy and ambassador in the country.

It also has ties with the US, and is a regular port of call for American warships.

"We hope this meeting will advance prospects for peace in the Korean Peninsula,” Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

It is not the first time Singapore has been chosen for high-profile diplomatic talks. In 2015 China and Taiwan held their first talks in more than six decades on the island city-state.
