Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke on the phone with US President Donald Trump and discussed Afghanistan’s situation, the Uzbek presidential press service said in a statement on Thursday.
Particular attention was paid to ensuring regional security, peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, fight against international terrorism, extremism and radicalism.
The sides stressed the importance of broad international support for the economic recovery of Afghanistan.
This comes after agreements on the implementation of specific projects were reached during the visit of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to Uzbekistan this month.
Also, an exchange of views took place on topical international and regional issues of mutual interest.
Trump welcomed open and constructive foreign policy, active efforts of Uzbekistan to develop good-neighborly relations and strengthen cooperation with the countries of the region, which contribute to the strengthening of peace and stability in Central Asia.
The presidents of Uzbekistan and the US underscored their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations of strategic partnership on the principles of mutual respect, trust and consideration of each other's interests.
In order to jointly consider prospective plans of expansion of the bilateral cooperation, Trump invited his counterpart to pay an official visit to the US.
At the end of the conversation, the two presidents exchanged their greetings and best wishes on the occasion of the upcoming New Year 2018.
