Zimbabwe’s Ruling Party Fires Mugabe

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was fired as leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party on Sunday during a special meeting and replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, the deputy he fired this month.

According to Reuters, Mugabe’s fate was sealed at the meeting. “He has been expelled,” one of delegates told Reuters. “Mnangagwa is our new leader,” a party official told Reuters.

This comes after the military seized control a few days ago and put Mugabe under house arrest.

On Saturday, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of the capital Harare, calling for Mugabe to step down. However, until Sunday’s decision by ZANU-PF, Mugabe refused to resign.
