Saudi Forces Foil Terror Plot Against Mecca’s Grand Mosque

Saudi security forces foiled a terror plot targeting the Grand Mosque in Mecca on Friday, the Saudi Arabian Interior Ministry said.

According to the ministry the terror plot was planned by three terrorist groups, two based in Mecca and the third in Jeddah, Saudi Gazette reported.

The ministry said that their security forces launched two operations in Mecca including in the Ajyad Al-Masafi neighborhood.

“A suicide bomber, who was hiding in a three-story building in the Ajyad neighborhood, opened fire on security forces after refusing to comply with calls to turn himself in. He later blew himself up after the security forces tightened the noose around him,” Interior Ministry’s security spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said.

The building collapsed after the suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Eleven people including five security force members were wounded in the blast.

After the explosion, security forces detained five suspects, including a woman. They are all being interrogated, the ministry said.
