UK Will Do 'Whatever It Takes' to Ensure Britons' Safety: Braverman

The UK Home Secretary on Sunday commented on the detention of three British nationals in Afghanistan, saying that “if there are British citizens abroad, then the UK government is going to do whatever it takes to ensure that they are safe.”

Suella Braverman made the remarks to the UK broadcaster Sky News as reported by the Associated Press.

“Anyone travelling to dangerous parts of the world should take the utmost caution. If they are going to do that, they should always act on the advice of the Foreign Office travel advice,” Braverman said. “And if there are risks to people's safety, if they are British citizens abroad, then the UK government is going to do whatever it takes to ensure that they are safe. And the government is in negotiations and working hard to ensure people's safety is upheld.”

Sky News reported that the three Britons were believed to be detained by the Taliban in January.

The Islamic Emirate has not yet provided details about the three detainees.

“The reaction of the Home Secretary of the UK about the detention of three Britons in Afghanistan is understandable. Every government is obliged to support their citizens but with international laws, there is the observation of and respect for the country’s internal laws,” said Mohammad Zalmai Afghnyar, a military veteran.

“When a foreign national travels to other countries, he/she is obliged to abide by the rules and laws of that country. Whenever the foreigners are coming to spy or commit actions that violate the laws of Afghanistan, then the country has the right to detain the foreigners,” said Sarwar Niazai, a political analyst.

Prior to that, a UK-based charity told Sky News that three British nationals were being held by the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan.
