UN Security Council to Hold Meeting on UNAMA Renewal

The United Nations Security Council is set to meet on Thursday about the renewal of the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Naseer Ahmad Faiq, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Afghanistan Permanent Mission to the UN, criticized UNAMA's performance in the political sector in Afghanistan but added that the presence of the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan is important for reporting on human rights violations and coordinating the collection of humanitarian aid.

“Unfortunately, UNAMA did not perform as it should; But in general, we support the extension of UNAMA's mission,” Naseer Ahmad Faiq said.

The UNAMA mission is set to end in 5 days, on March 17.

“Activities are done to help needy people -- UNAMA is active in this area-- but in other sectors, unfortunately, UNAMA has not done its work,” said Ainuddin Bek, a human rights activist.

The Islamic Emirate said that the activities of UNAMA are affected by the policies of the US and that this organization should be independent in its decisions.

“The UN is under the influence of America and UNAMA is part of the UN, the way the American policies in Afghanistan are, UNAMA goes like that,” said Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate.

UNAMA is a political mission of the United Nations in Afghanistan, which was established on March 28, 2002, by the UN Security Council based on Resolution 1401.
