Abdullah Labels Violence Against Women A Big Challenge

Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday said violence against women across the country is a big challenge in the way of efforts to improve and promote their rules in society and decision-making processes.

CEO made the remarks in a three-day meeting organized by the Attorney General Office (AGO) on fighting violence against women. The meeting started on Sunday in Kabul.

“The issue of violence and violence against women is still in our way and we are affected by this phenomenon,” said Abdullah.

Abdullah continued and said a number of people, especially women, face different types of violence in the country.

“There is violence in behavior and even in law implementation. Sometimes, under the name of law implementation, violence is committed and people’s rights are stepped on,” Abdullah added.

Attorney General Farid Hamidi, meanwhile at the meeting, said AGO has taken steps to fight violence against women.

According to Hamidi, the appointment of female heads in AGO’s anti-violence departments across the country is part of their efforts.

“I suggest that in Afghanistan a week should be named as the ‘Week of Support to Families’ and in this week all the government and non-government institutions should concentrate on families and the position of families in Afghanistan society and analyze their rules,” said Hamidi.

According to AGO, currently in over 30 provinces, women lead the anti-violence departments.

In the last year, efforts have increased in fighting violence against women, and so far awareness has been given to more than 75,000 people around the country about fighting the violence and harassment, as well as people being given information regarding women’s financial rights.
