Afghan Female MP New Head Of IPU’s Human Rights Committee

Fawzia Kofi, a female member of the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) has been selected as the head of Committee on Human Rights for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Members of the committee gave Kofi a vote of confidence against nominees from other countries for the position.

Kofi has said her selection for the position shows that the world trusts in the potential and ability of Afghan women.

The IPU is the international organization of parliaments (Article 1 of the Statutes of the Inter-Parliamentary Union). It was established in 1889.

The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples globally and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
