A 23-year-old man who fled Afghanistan six years ago has died at a Melbourne immigration detention center, the ABC News said in a report on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation Center (MITA) in Broadmeadows, in Melbourne’s north, just after 11:30pm on Friday, the report said. 

The man was treated at the scene but could not be revived and a Victoria Police spokeswoman said he died about 12:20am on Saturday, the report said. 

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

“We express our condolences to the man’s family and friends,” an Australian Border Force spokesperson said as quoted by the ABC News. 

The ABC report says that the man first entered Australia as an unaccompanied minor seeking asylum in 2013.

It is believed he had been held at the MITA for 10 months and had been seeking legal help to arrange legal residency.

Carolyn Graydon, principal lawyer for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, said the death of the man "raises serious questions".

“There are very serious issues as to how he has been treated since he arrived here as a minor, what kind of support he was provided on his journey seeking asylum and protection, how he was treated and bandied around from one immigration center to another,” Graydon said.

“While the full circumstances are yet to emerge, I think it's important that there's a full inquiry into what happened to him,” she said as quoted by ABC News.
