Paktika Officials: Gayan Earthquake Victims Still Homeless

Local officials of the Gayan district said that houses have not yet been built for many earthquake victims in the district.

According to them, more than 7,000 houses in the district were destroyed in the deadly earthquake of 1401.

They said that 850 houses have been rebuilt and work is ongoing with over 2,700 houses, and there are plans to start work on 800 houses in the future, but there are more than 3,000 houses left for construction on which nothing has been done.

“7,461 houses were completely destroyed in the earthquake, about 8,500 houses were built and handed to the people, more than 2,700 houses are being worked on, and another 800 houses are on the UNHCR list, and the remaining houses still remain without any construction,” said Mohammad, deputy of the Gayan district.

“The people who are left without houses are worried and facing many challenges,” said Monawer Haqqani, a member of the committee to help the victims of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, the residents of the district are asking the current government and supporting institutions to help them in the construction of the remaining houses.

They said that due to the lack of shelter during the winter, a large number of children and elderly people died due to the cold weather.

“Last winter many people lost their lives due to the cold weather,” said Abdullah Jan, a Gayan resident.

“I am asking the organizations to take action before the arrival of winter, otherwise if we face heavy rain, it will be difficult for us,” said Zarif Jan, a Gayan resident.

The spokesman of the Islamic Emirate spoke of the construction of shelters for the most affected people in the Gayan and Barmal districts of the province.

“The aid provided by traders and the Islamic Emirate, which was received by affected people, and the aid announced by the institutions and the international community, have not arrived on time,” said Zabiullah Mujahid.

The residents of Gayan Paktika district want the authorities to pay attention to the construction of roads, health centers, and other parts of their lives in addition to the construction of shelters.
