Security Ramped Up in Kabul On Eve of Peace Conference

Rattled by recent waves of violence, the Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) is taking extra measures to try to ensure security around the second Kabul Process conference which will be held in Kabul on Wednesday.

“Our focus will be concentrated on some central points, the routes the guests will use and some areas where there are problems will be under security surveillance,” said MoI spokesman Najib Danish.

Afghan officials have said that the conference will streamline a framework for other meetings which will be held on Afghanistan at an international level in future in line with the priorities of the Afghan government.

“The Kabul Process lays the framework for all the processes that would lead to peace and stability in the country. The Kabul Process is led by Afghans and supported by the regional and international communities,” said Haroon Chakhansuri, President Ashraf Ghani’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Communications and Media.

Chakhansuri added: “After continuous High Peace Council meetings with the relevant parties including civil society, media, youth, political parties, private sector, women, and farmers, a comprehensive peace concept has been prepared by government and will be presented at the Kabul conference.”

Kabul Process meeting is a gathering of 25 nations and organizations including the EU, UN and NATO, and aims to discuss security and political issues in the country.

The objectives of Kabul Process include:

•             Supporting an Afghan-led peace process;
•             Formation of a regional and international consensus to maintain peace and stability in Afghanistan;
•             Attracting the cooperation of the countries in the region and the world to pressurize Pakistan and gain their support in military policies in case the Taliban fail to join the peace process.
