Senators Worry About Trucks Crossing Durand Line Unchecked

A number of Meshrano Jirga senators on Tuesday raised concerns over the possibility of weapons being smuggled into Afghanistan as hundreds of trucks cross the Durand Line following the reopening of gates.

They were concerned that due to the sheer volume of vehicles the trucks might go through Torkham and Spin Boldak gates unchecked.

“When the border was open, hundreds of trucks full of explosive devices were transferred to Afghanistan. Now also it is a trick (border closure) and checking all the trucks is very difficult,” said Juma Din Gianwal, a senator.

A number of Afghans also said they were worried about weapons being transferred to Afghanistan through Torkham and Spin Boldak gates.

“It is possible that explosive devices have been loaded on the trucks that were stopped in Pakistan and there is no doubt about it, because in the past such actions happened,” Daud Hazara, a Kabul resident said.

“Security forces are responsible for checking trucks and travelers properly,” said Thuraia Jalali, another Kabul resident.

Security departments have not commented on this, but border police said they check every truck and vehicle properly.

“People are worried, but we will prevent such actions. We check all the trucks, cars and passengers and they won’t be able to transfer explosive devices or other illegal items to Afghanistan,” a border policeman said.
