UN Report Shows Increase In Civilian Casualties Due To Airstrikes

A report by the United Nations indicates that 8,019 civilians including women and children were killed and wounded in the Afghan conflict in the first nine months of this year.

The report also says anti-government armed groups are responsible for the 64 percent of the casualties while the Afghan government affiliated forces are responsible for 20 percent of the civilian deaths.

The report shows that civilian casualties in airstrikes have increased by 50 percent during the past nine months.

According to the report, 2,640 civilians were killed and 5,379 others were wounded as a result of violence, conflicts and airstrikes.

“Civilian causalities have increased unprecedentedly and everyday we witness civilian deaths. This shows clear violation of international laws in Afghanistan,” the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission's spokesman Bilal Sediqi said.

The report states that at least 205 civilians, which two third of them were women and children, were killed in airstrikes carried out by Afghan and foreign forces during the past nine months.

Civilian casualties have dropped by six percent against last year, but the casualties in airstrikes have increased to 50 percent, the report says.

The UN report shows that from 205 civilians killed in airstrikes, 38 percent of them were killed in foreign airstrikes while the Afghan Air Force are responsible for over 60 percent of the deaths.

“The main responsibity goes to the insurgents becasue they continue war in Afghanistan. They hide themselves in residential areas and use civilians as shields and an example of such move happened in Logar,” Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.

Pentagon in reaction to civilian casualties said they conduct the air operations in accordance with the armed conflicts and that they observe all the rules and regulations in this respect.

“The airstike that we are aware of and we are willing to is conducted in compliance with the law of armed confilct,” Pentagon Joint Staff Director Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie said.

“We do not have access to insurgents and armed groups, but the poor management within the secuirty forces is a reason behind civilian casualties and we hope that it should be prohabited,” Fakoori Beheshti, an MP, said.

The foreign forces’ airstrikes have increased following the announcement of the new US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia.

Reports indicate that the foreign forces dropped at least 800 bombs on Daesh and Taliban targets only in September.
