Afghan Migrants Complain on Harassment and Arrest in Iran

A number of Afghan migrants in Iran have complained that they are continuously harassed and arrested by the police of that country.

Afghan citizens living in Iran said that they visit less in the city and entertainment places for fear of being arrested by the police.

"The Iranian police treat us very badly. If they catch any Afghan in the park or on the road, they take away his phone and money, everything he has, and if he has nothing on him, they transfer him to a camp," Akbar Sultani, one of the Afghan migrants in Iran, told TOLOnews.

"We demand the Islamic Emirate to have a meeting with the Iranian authorities, especially the United Nations office, as soon as possible to find a proper solution for preventing the deportation of Afghan migrants," said Ali Reza Karimi, a migrant rights activist.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations, criticizing the arrest of Afghan migrants in Iran, said that efforts are being made to release Afghan migrants who are imprisoned in Iran.

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Refugees, about 7,000 Afghan migrants are imprisoned in Iran.

"We estimate that we have about 7,000 imprisoned migrants in Iran, of which a thousand migrants who have been reported to us have been released. We have diplomatic contacts that other prisoners will also be released," Abdul Rahman Rashed, the Deputy Minister of Refugees and Repatriations, told TOLOnews.

In the meantime, some migrant rights activists said that the Islamic Emirate should pay serious attention to Afghan migrants in distant and nearby countries.

"The Iranian government has started deporting undocumented migrants and is vigorously implementing this plan, which has caused a series of problems for migrants," Mohammad Khan Talibi Mohammadzai, an activist in the field of migrant rights, told TOLOnews.

A number of Iranian media have recently reported that Iran has started the plan of "collecting and returning illegal citizens" in the early days of the new year in the country. According to reports, this plan will be implemented until the end of the Nowruz holidays in recreational and other areas.
