Family of Fifty: Inside Ahmad’s Bustling Household in Herat

Ahmad, a 52-year-old man in Herat, boasts the largest family in his community, with 26 children and 18 grandchildren.

He shares his life with three wives in the Keshk-e Robat Sangi district of Herat, where they cultivate a vibrant and bustling household.

He told a TOLOnews reporter: “If any of my children are missing even for a night, I cannot be at peace. The more noise they make, the more pleasure it gives me, and I sit among them. Some people tell me that I have so many children that my house is like a wedding hall. A guest came once and said he felt like he was in a hall when he saw all of us at the dining table.”

Ahmad runs a bakery in the center of Keshk-e Robat Sangi district of Herat with several of his sons. Some of Ahmad's sons are tailors and others are engaged in metalworking.

“God willing, I would love to have more children. I prevented it for some years; otherwise, I would now have up to seventy children,” Ahmad added.

All members of Ahmad's family live in a large house. Three of his sons are married, and four others are engaged.

Several of Ahmad's children told the TOLOnews reporter that they live under one roof without any family disputes or conflicts.

Wahid Ahmad, Ahmad's son, told TOLOnews: “There is no difference among us about which one is from which mother. We all live under one roof in one house. I feel very happy to spend days and nights together.”

Maisam, another one of Ahmad's sons, said: “When we go to a mill or sit at one table, it pleases me a lot. We are also happy when we go to relatives' homes together.”

The children in this family play with their siblings without going outside.

Zainab, Ahmad’s daughter also stated: “We play with our younger siblings and our time flies. We go to school together and when we come home from school, we do the household chores together.”

Azra, Ahmad’s granddaughter, says, “At night, we eat bread at one table, and we children play together. I really enjoy this.”

Ahmad raised his children with the income from his bakery. Now, this business has been passed down to several of his sons.

Ahmad also mentioned that he plans to marry for the fourth time in the coming weeks.
