Govt Criticized For ‘Failing’ To Probe Assassination Cases

The body of Obaidullah Barakzai, former MP from Uruzgan, who was killed in an attack by unknown armed men in Kandahar province on Saturday, was laid to rest in the cemetery of Afghan lawmakers within the premises of Afghanistan’s National Assembly building in Kabul.

According to his son, his family lost 30 of its members during similar incidents of violence over the past 40 years.

President Ashraf Ghani, who attended Barakzai’s funeral, said directed the Ministry of Interior Affairs to launch an investigation into the case.

“All investigations must be carried out immediately,” said Ghani.

Some lawmakers who attended the ceremony criticized government for “failing” to probe assassination cases of high-ranking officials and influential figures in the country.

“Perpetrators behind such incidents have not been served justice. It is unfortunate. I hope that government takes action today,” said Mohammad Alam Ezatyar, Deputy Speaker of Meshrano Jirga.

One of Barakzai’s son, Ismail Barakzai, serves in the Afghan National Army.

“Such pains are inflicted to hundreds of families across Afghanistan on a daily basis. We are also proud of sharing this pain,” said Ismail.

“None of the elders in our family has died of illness or natural death; they all were martyred,” said Barakzai’s elder son Hazrat Shah.

Over 20 members of Afghan parliament have lost their lives during the past 15 years with most of them as a result of terrorism-related incidents.
