Kabul Process Meeting On Peace Scheduled For June

The presidential palace said this week it is reaching out to regional countries to support moves to end the war and in line with this has scheduled the Kabul Process conference for next month.

Shahhussain Murtazawi, the acting presidential spokesman, said regional partners will take part in this all-important meeting. He did not however specify what countries will attend.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on June 6 and delegates will look at ways to bring an end to the war in Afghanistan.

“The Kabul meeting will focus on peace. Afghanistan aims to get countries in the region to cooperate with the peace process and to get regional consensus.”

Unveiling the plans at a meeting in Kabul with western diplomats, President Ashraf Ghani said this week that the conference will not be a “ceremonial process”, but the beginning of a move towards commitment to lasting peace.

The Kabul Process aims to secure support for an agreement to end support for cross-border terrorism. Ghani said that Afghanistan was the victim of an “undeclared war by non-state actors.”

He said that a stable Afghanistan would benefit the region and the world, and stressed the potential for gas pipelines, internet connectivity and other advantages of the strategic location of Afghanistan at the heart of Asia.
