Kunduz War Damages Civilian Houses

Following the reopening of Kunduz-Takhar Highway to traffic after seven days of heavy clashes between Afghan forces and the Taliban, a number of residents of Khanabad district said the war has damaged their houses and that government should launch a large-scale military operation to clear the areas of militants.

TOLOnews reporter Karim Amini said the Taliban started their attack from Nawabad Andrabiha village in Khanabad district and reached close to Kunduz city after seven days of heavy clashes.

He said the houses on the two sides of the highway, which were used by the Taliban as shields, have been damaged and that threats still remain to the road.

“The clashes started at 5am in the morning and by the afternoon we saw no government forces at the area to come and help the people,” said Ahmad Nadir, a resident of Khanabad district.

“We have suffered a lot. Our houses have been damaged. Government should come and assess what we have lost,” said Waisuddin, a resident of the district.

Meanwhile, a number of public uprising forces in Khanabad district in Kunduz criticized government’s war strategy in the province.

“They [public uprising forces] fought for three days without receiving water and food. What we should do when government acts like this?” asked Zmarai, a member of public uprising forces in the province.

“They [public uprising forces] fought until their ammunitions were finished. The national army and other forces did not support them. Why the Afghan National Army soldiers left the area [in Khanabad district]? This is an imposed decision [made by the army soldiers]. It has been imposed on us to kill our commanders [of public uprising forces],” said Abdul Samad, another member of the public uprising forces.

On Friday, the Kunduz-Takhar Highway was cleared of Taliban and was reopened to traffic following seven days of heavy clashes between government forces and Taliban.
