Senior Military Officers Review Kabul Checkpoints

Resolute Support Command Sgt. Maj. David M. Clark and Sgt. Maj. Roshan Safi of the Afghanistan National Army this week visited checkpoints in Kabul to review biometric scanning procedures, general security measures and even living quarters.

This came as part of the Afghan and Resolute Support military leaders’ efforts to uphold and improve security measures across Afghanistan’s capital city.

According to Resolute Support, Clark and Safi visited several security checkpoints throughout Kabul on Monday night.

"We’re certainly getting better every day. We’re not where we want to be yet, but we’re going to get there,” said Clark while inspecting troop equipment and housing.

"These guys want to be here; they want to protect the people here,” Clark added. "We’re going to make sure that happens.”

Resolute Support reported that Clark and Safi’s routine checkpoint visits give them a better picture of the overall security climate, and allow them to make sure Afghan troops continue to have what they need in order to be successful.

"We are here 24/7, not just when it is convenient,” Safi said with his arm around an Afghan soldier. "We are on the front lines, and we will be here every day, every night to protect Kabul."

Last week, Col. Hashmatullah Muslim, Afghan National Police Unit 01 commander, visited Resolute Support Headquarters to discuss the security within the Green Zone. During the meeting, Muslim laid out plans for increased security and surveillance for the various international embassies in the area.

Resolute Support reported that according to Muslim Police Unit 01 is moving into the former Ministry of Interior Building, close to where an ambulance bomb recently killed more than 100 people. He also says the move "will show the enemy our unit will not be defeated.”

"We are the first line of defense,” said Muslim. "Every minute, every day, we are standing as a barrier in front of the enemy."

Following the January attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, the Afghan government approved a revised Kabul Security Plan, which aims to restore security and stability to the capital by strengthening checkpoints, troop numbers and surveillance.

Resolute Support also noted that in addition to tightened security measures, Kabul security forces and Afghan National Defense Security Forces are on the offensive.

Resolute Support stated the new plan will improve the immediate defense and infrastructure around key points in the city and expand the current security zone to fully regulate movements in and out of Kabul.
