Critics Ask NUG To Deliver On Promises Ahead Of Brussels Summit

Aziz Rafaee, head of the civil society network Thursday said that leaders of the national unity government are neglecting to deliver on their promises they made to the international community for continued international aid to Afghanistan, warning that if such practises continue, repercussions will not be in the interests of Afghanistan.

"None of the promises were delivered properly, we are seriously concerned about the issue of a possible halt to international aid," he said.

Meanwhile, the presidency has reiterated that the NUG has undertaken the necessary steps to deliver on the promises it has made to the world community ahead of the summit on Afghanistan in Brussels.

"Preparations for Brussels Summit are complete at the leadership and technical levels, we will participate at the summit by defining comprehensive plans and as a responsible government," deputy presidential spokesman Shahhussain Murtazawi said.

Brussels Summit is an important platform for continued international support to Afghanistan.

The Brussels Summit is likely to focus on three main aspects:

Joint cooperation between Afghanistan and the international community to ensure the effectiveness of aid to the Afghan people.

Reforms programs by the Afghan government including economic reforms, rule of law, fighting corruption and improving the financial management in the country.

Regional efforts for the peace process in Afghanistan and regional economic cooperation.

"International community will decline their aid to Afghanistan if the government of Afghanistan fails to deliver on their promise and also the people of Afghanistan are fed up with the current situation," law expert Nasrullah Stanekzai said.

21 months have passed since the London conference on Afghanistan. Critics say that the national unity government has failed to deliver on its promises it made to the world during the summit.

Afghan government pledged the following measures to the world during the London Conference:

Electoral reforms

Legal and judicial reforms

Reforms in the ministry of finance

Fighting corruption

Establishment of independent revenue department

Increasing the level of income taxes

Reforms in the financial laws

Many believe that the government has failed to deliver on its promises amid election reform deadlocks. The anti-corruption justice center has also not started its job, corruption exists and activities of private sector have declined. More than one million Afghans have been displaced internally and also the peace process has stopped.

The Brussels Summit on Afghanistan is scheduled for 4 and 5 October 2016.
