Afghanistan To Receive More Assistance At Brussels: U.S Envoy

Richard Olson, Special Representative of the United States for Afghanistan and Pakistan has said the international community will pledge a package of $3 billion USD for Kabul but in exchange for reform in Afghan government.

"It is no secret that today Afghanistan remains dependent on donors and about 70% of Afghan government's expenditures are funded through external donors. The Afghan government's objective is to define a path to stimulate domestic growth and expand the revenue," Olson said.

Olson said the United States will try to continue its support to Afghanistan up to 2020 in the current level or below Washington will invest $5 billion USD every year in the country.

"The U.S and international support to Afghanistan is not a bank check. Our support is conditioned and conditional on Afghan progress. And our collective ability to continue providing significant levels of support to Afghanistan as dependent on the Afghan governments' performance," he added.

The National Unity Government (NUG) will present its plans at the Brussels Summit and if the international community is satisfied with plans commitments made by Kabul, it will grant new aid packages to Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, a number of political analysts criticized the NUG for not fulfilling some of its commitments, saying that it will damage Kabul's reputation among the people and the international community.

"The international community has seen that NUG have not fulfilled its commitments, but it has to announce its support to Afghan government in order to address the challenges," said Farhad Hashimi, a political analyst.
