IEC Announces Preliminary List Of Presidential Candidates

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday announced the preliminary list of the candidates of the upcoming presidential elections which are scheduled for July 20.

All the 18 candidates have been included in the list and that no one has been disqualified at this stage, said IEC Chairman Abdulbadi Sayyad.

Based on the elections law, the presidential elections candidates should not have dual citizenship and also should not have committed any crime.

A number of election observer organizations doubt the IEC’s ability to bring a change in the list if it is needed.

The Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) said their assessments show that the current political situation of the country has affected the activities of the election commission.

“The political situation of the country has become complex to the extent that without any doubt will affect the elections,” TEFA spokeswoman Sughra Saadat said.

The Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) said even if the candidates have dual citizenships, the election commission is not able to remove them from the list.

“If the commission is thinking that after announcing the preliminary list will be able to change the list, it is making a mistake, because the commission does not have the ability to do so,” said Yusuf Rasheed, CEO of FEFA.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the elections commission has not shared the required documents of the candidates with the ministry.

“We hope the commission by accepting its weaknesses, inabilities and delays, soon take action on receiving written authorization letters from the candidates and their running mates in this regard,” said Sebghat Ahmadi, spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On January 3, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) officially started the registration process for presidential elections. The process ended on January 20.

The candidates who have entered the election race include former member of Afghanistan’s parliament Abdul Latif Pedram, incumbent President Ashraf Ghani, incumbent Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, former national security advisor Mohammad Haneef Atmar, former foreign minister Zalmai Rassoul, former minister of interior Noorul-haq-Ulomi, former Afghan ambassador to India Shaida Mohammad Abdali, Sayed Noorullah Jalili, Enayatullah Hafiz, leader of Hizb-e-Islami Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Ahmad Wali Massoud, Noor Rahman Laiwal and former NDS chief Rahmatullah Nabil, Mohammad Hakim Torsan and ex-director general of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Faramarz Tamanna.
