IEC Will Only Hold Presidential Elections In September: Nuristani

Hawal Alam Nuristani, head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), on Wednesday said the electoral body has decided to conduct only the presidential elections on September 28, an announcement which reversed a previous decision by the commission to conduct Ghazni parliamentary elections and the district council elections on the same day.

Nuristani said at a press conference that the decision has been made to give more time to the presidential elections and focusing on technical issues so that the outcome of the election will be acceptable to all parties, mainly the people of Afghanistan.

She said the IEC will conduct Ghazni’s parliamentary elections and the district council elections next year.

Nuristani said the voter registration process will be carried out with the current identity cards, adding that voters’ fingers will be processed in biometric identification devices on the elections day.

The IEC chairperson called on the international community to finalize the $130 million budget for the elections.

Following the controversial parliamentary elections and the amendment of the election law, the Independent Election Commission in March announced September 28 as the new date for the polls – after two times delay.
