Bamiyan Ski Girls Celebrate Int’l Women’s Day

While facing with lack of facilities, a number of Bamiyan girls held a one-day ski race on Friday to celebrate the International Women’s Day.

TOLOnews’ Samim Faramarz says he visited a family whose four members are ski players.

Members of the family told TOLOnews that their aim is to fight discrimination and violence against women in the country.

“We do not have enough facilities here. For instance, there is no professional skier, but the youths come here every Friday and practice skiing,” said Nasrullah Adeli, a skier in Bamiyan.

Bamiyan skiers said they love the mountains, the snow and the cold weather of winter as it paves the ground for their rehearses.

“I always tell women to be powerful and it is my dream. There is no difference between women and men. Anyone should be able to do anything they want. No matter it is sport or education,” said Fariba Amhadi, a female skier in the province.

Zakia and Raihana, the two sisters who attended the competition, said believe in hard work to achieve their goals in life.

Zakia said she started skiing five years ago and besides that she is the oldest sister and the breadwinner of the family.

“Women’s situation is good in Bamiyan. They can go out, have access to education and can work,” Zakia said.

“When I saw that Zakia, my father and Mahdi played ski, I also wanted to learn it. Now I am happy. I started playing ski last year and learned it by the help of my father, Zakia and Mahdi,” Raihana said.

Other members of the family said their demand is that discrimination against women must be stopped.

“According to my point of view, there is no difference between me, Mahdi, Zakia, Raihana and my wife. I encourage them in doing any activities, whether it is sports or other good practice,” said Daud Mohammadi, skier and the father of the family.
