Attack on Iranian Consulate in Damascus Sparks Intl Reactions

Last night's attack (Monday, April 1) on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, the capital of Syria, has provoked worldwide reactions.

Qatar, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and several other countries have called this attack a crime.

Syrian foreign minister Faisal Mekdad said: “(We expressed) our condolences for the casualties and our sadness for these strikes that are unjustified against any diplomatic corps and we pledge the importance of continuing Syrian-Iranian relations based on morals and values.”

In the airstrike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, the capital of Syria, seven people including two senior commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force were killed.

Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of the commanders of the Quds Force, and Haj Rahimi, his deputy, were among the casualties of the attack.

The Iranian ambassador to Syria blamed Israel for this attack and warned that this Israeli attack will not go unanswered.

Hossein Akbari, the Iranian ambassador to Syria, said, “We told you before, Zionist entity knows very well that such crimes and any kind of crimes will not remain without response.”

"Today Israel launched an attack not only on the Iranian embassy but also on the Syrian capital Damascus. We will not be silent. We will respond directly because they have attacked us too many times. We also demand that the United States end its Syria military presence," said a Syrian citizen.

A number of Iranian citizens in Tehran have demonstrated and burned the flags of the United States of America and Israel.

"Therefore, we must have a serious answer to this action, like the answer we gave during the assassination of general Soleimani, and this answer must reach the whole world," said Mohammad Razavi, a protester.

"The embassy is considered part of a country’s territory. There should definitely be a firm response to this action," said Kosar Adhami, a protester.

However, the United States of America has announced that in response to this attack, it has deployed a special team to investigate this event and find its perpetrators.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said: "So, look, I'm aware of the reports. Our team is looking into it, so I'm not going to get ahead of anything just yet. But obviously, we're aware of the reports and our team is looking into it. I'm just not going to go beyond that.”

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian Foreign Minister, has also called this attack a violation of all commitments and international conventions and emphasized that Israel will be responsible for the consequences of this attack.

So far, Israel has not commented on the attack.
